Heres a little preliminary image of Jessica Albarn's 'Bee Flower' piece, drawing on the artist's fascination with all things great, and very very small.

Jessica's pieces are often characterised by a duality- an illustration of strength in the most delicate of creatures. In her much loved ‘Balancing Bee’ artwork, the honey bee stands proud, hailing from the sophisticated insect colonies which have provedvital to human civilization throughout history. Yet the tracery of Albarn’s detailed linework simultaneously emphasizes the fragility of nature, and the realityof the Honey Bee’s plight in our contemporary environment- in fact thiscreature is highly endangered by destructive parasites and climate change,teetering on the brink of extinction.

Once again, 'Bee Flower' depicts the heroic bees (this time dwarfed by a large, characteristically geometric flower motif) during the vital process of pollination, whilst nature's delicate balance is encapsulated in the intricate detail of Albarn's stunning illustration.

We are buzzing for this one- set for gallery release in the new year..

Got a Sweet Toof?

The rosey pink gums of infamous street artist Sweet Toof are well recognised fixture throughout the streets of East London, and Nelly is lucky enough to display some of the artist's fine printed pieces aswell.

Indeed, we will soon have some brand new, particularly regal creations (including a piece entitled 'Louis XVI') to get your pearly whites into- soon to be on display in the gallery and online, so keep your eyes and ears open!

Out of street context and raised to eye level, the pieces gloss printed figures take centre stage whilst their native street environment unfolds before your eyes, captured at midnight or midday- you chose! This time a couple of 'Free-runnners' are about to witness the inevitable demise of a free falling, obese man, or is he flying? What ever next in the weird and wonderful world of Delgado?!

Nelly Duff was delighted to be graced with the presence of the Pearly Kings and Queens of London last night, featured in Pure Evil's recent 'Pure Evil in the Ruins of the Bank of England.'

The Pearlies dedicate themselves to fund raising for various charities and were out in force for this week's 'Christmas Wednesday' when we were lucky enough to have them recreate the image for us, take a look for yourself!

Nelly Duff will be taking part in the Village Underground Christmas Bazaar this Sunday the 4th of December!

Doors open at midday, so come and warm your cockles with a glass (or two..?) of mulled wine. There should be enough going on to tickle even the most scrooge-like of fancies, including a fantastic array of stalls and installations from Black Rat Press, Scrawl Collective, Hang Up Pictures and ofcourse Nelly Duff, a live art jam featuring the likes of Toasters and Pure Evil, one off t-shirt screen- printing, an artwork raffle, as well as live illustration and printing demos.

To boot, Nelly will be releasing the new series of Dr D's TFL screen prints and Pablo Delgado's brand new 'Free Runner' pieces at the event. All pieces are exclusive to the gallery, so come check us out!

With no kicking out time to be heard of, we should be set to carry on into the evening and guarantee you will leave very much merrier than you arrived!

Now those in the know will already be aware that the name Nelly Duff is derived from cockney rhyming slang, and indeed Nelly is a true British gal!

At the gallery we pride ourselves on our own in-house print production, working with an array of London based artists and print-makers to produce the distinctive artworks that make us so proud :)

Yet you don't have to go far to come across an ever growing sense of discenchantment, with regards to home grown craftmanship- take Aditya Chakrabortty's recent Guardian piece entitled 'Why Doesnt Britain Make Things Anymore?' However there are a few gems still sparkling, that are not 'Made in China.'

Birthplace of the old girl herself, Columbia Road is a hive of independent business, and ofcourse what could be more authentically 'London' than the Flower Market straight out of George Bernard Shaw! If you missed its London stint, you've missed a trick! Nelly was pleasantly suprised at the inventive array of designs on show at Shoreditch Underground, just off Brick Lane. Crossing over any number of disciplines- painting, sculpture, illustration, digital imaging to name but a few- this year's competion challenged any rudeboy ridden stereotypes, and presented a great opportunity for students from across the world to put their creative flair to the test..
Check out the winning entry featuring intricately carved, interlocking pieces of wood, based on the story of the Queen of Sheeba!

'The Boy in the Oak.'

Jessica Albarn's line drawings pick out the delicacy of the natural world, juxtaposed with her obsessive observation of an underlying geometric structure that underpins it all. Geniously illustrated via use of embossing and foiling techniques, these stunning artworks are in constant flux, just as nature itself.

Albarn's 2010 children's book, 'The Boy in the Oak' - the tale of a particularly destructive young boy who is trapped in an oak tree as punishment for his crimes against the wild life in his back garden- reinforces her apparent fascination with the delacy of nature, yet ultimate strength innate within it. Illustrated by Albarn throughout, with a beautifully textured hard cover, these lovely books were a labour of love, and it shows.. lovely stocking filler too :)

We have already expressed our excitement at the bizarre, miniature world of Pablo Delgado, and Nelly is indeed still keeping her beady eye open for more of his surreal scenarios all over town. Indeed, Nelly & Pablo have been working away on a brand new release to the gallery so watch this space..

Having emerged over the last two years from a series of mysterious doors, cut and pasted onto walls at pavement level, these miniscule figures inherently test the viewer’s intrigue; in order to realise what you are looking at, the viewer is forced to interact with each piece, bending down to the same level, to see this tiny parallel universe in action.

As they weather into the street, they become part of the surrounding environment and cement their claim as little machetes of a jovial, dream-like reality, that are a continual delight to all those willing to risk baring their crack in public!

Pure Evil’s deviant dabblings with antique printed imagery and historic references are a constant source of fascination for Nelly, most recently in his ‘Bank of England’ piece which confronts the viewer with an all too graphic representation of state of our (not so fair) city.

Indeed, one of Pure Evil's latest, a 2 colour fade screenprint, picks up where Toulouse Lautrec's lithographs of 1800’s Paris once led the most disenchanted of individuals. Printed on a 308 GSM Somerset deckled paper stock, 'Underworld's sensuous imagery beckons you down a darkened alley of scandal, intrigue, and absolutely no return- but we ain't complaining..

Nelly has had her eye of Dr D’s billboard edits for a while now, and his creative take on anything from political posters to Loreal advertisements have been a constant source of entertainment ever since- we love his cleverly manipulated London Tube signs informing passengers of the ‘No smirking’ policy, and who can forget ‘Mind the crack.’

Yet there is much more to these hijacked statements than immediately meets the eye, and this is exactly where their power lies. The good Dr’s ‘HMP London’ starkly questions our own awareness of the world directly around us, as the rat race trundle past.

For those who notice, Dr D urges you to raise an enlightened middle finger to the establishment, and so does Nelly.. coming soon!

Not so long ago, Sam bent our ear about the motivation behind some of these beautifully elegant, yet slightly menacing pieces. Drawing inspiration from the rigidity of mathematic formulae and the uniquely 80s logic of vintage video games, to the surreal and intensely personal world of his own dreams- its all about conflicting shapes, halftone overlays and ethereal perspective- and we think its genius!

Highlighted in copper foiling, this technique beautifully showcases the deliniated detail of Dan's work, and involves laying a sheet of foil over the engraved plate, which is then heated in order to transfer the image onto the printing surface.

...Not Banksy Vandalising?!... Its was an interesting question people have asking in the gallery what Nelly thinks of the Channel 4 documentary Graffiti Wars. The documentary was shot well but seemed very one sided and they were no contributors offering alternative views - which just seemed like bad journalism. We want more artists murals to stay up and inspire communities and people (not artists) who do empty tags over the top of Murals aren't helping… ; )

On a separate note, not sure who went over this Banksy but its sad to see in this way, sure go over the top if you have got something to say...

Murdoch owns 20th century fox - the film studio behind massive films like Avatar, to age old greats like Paramount Pictures which brought us Beverly Hills Cop… or The Premiership Football or the 175 daily newspapers - his reach has been massive in politics and the law in the english speaking world….

Liberty Festival 2011: Call for submissions

Submissions of Disability Arts and Deaf Arts work, from 1950 to the present day, are invited for inclusion in a video piece to be screened as part of the 2011 Liberty Festival in the Clore Ballroom, Southbank Centre on 3rd September.

Caglar Kimyoncu and Simon McKeown’s composite video work will present a playful whistle-stop retrospective of Disability and Deaf Arts over the last sixty years and their contribution to London culture. Splicing together archive footage and imagery with contemporary material, it will refer back to the celebration of the 1951 Festival of Britain. You can submit your own work, or archive images or documentation of Disability Arts work and events from the past.

The work will be screened at various intervals throughout the 3rd September. Please note that the video piece will not include sound and will act as a backdrop for other events. Submitted works may be cropped or only excerpts included, and may be juxtaposed or overlaid with other images. All will be credited.

How to submit work:

A californian court has ruled against Mr.Brainwash for copyright infringement the hollywood reporter writes! I think the general public would support brainwash if his art really tried to take these re-mixed images to another level but alas it seems the great majority of his work, is just to change the colour on something and give it a stencil look repeatedly. This practice alone is not enough and is potentially damaging to subtle tweaks from artists who genuinely subvert images that can have profound effects in the best cases...

After more than 40 years under Qaddafi, Libyans in the rebel stronghold of Benghazi have taken to mocking the Libyan dictator with colorful caricatures. Before residents in the rebel-held east ripped themselves free from Qaddafi's rule, drawing such satirical pictures of the leader in public was unthinkable, and the regime would have severely punished anyone caught doing so.

We love the MJ sculpture, which is a life-sized depiction of the moment in Berlin in 2002, when he dangled his baby out of the window (!). It's created by Swedish-born sculptor Maria von Köhler and is titled "Madonna and Child". You can see it at 209 Hackney Rd until May 1st 2011.

...and up to Bow and i am sure beyond really, really needs some TLC. The water is incredibly dirty and filled with rubbish... seriously needs dredging. There has been no sign of the olympic investment making any real difference along what should be fantastic local attraction for restaurants and walking, etc. Amazed the council has not done anything about it... But trust the street artists like sweetoof, etc and now worldwaron latest installation placed along the canal to offer some eye candy...

The Lion/Rabbit hybrid is a seemingly innocuous image but represents the subversion of the Urban Planner. Le Corbusier, one of the strongest identities in modernist architecture, took a paternalist approach to planning with the notion that the lion is the architect, the master, and the masses are the rabbits. Rarely does the contemporary urban landscape develop organically but is instead defined by the clamor of contending agendas and legislation. This image and its dissemination throughout neighborhoods all over the world is the embodiment of the resolutions and failures of planners to control the incredible mess and natural logic that is the city.

...I wonder what that will mean for some of shep's other artworks that have been taken from photographs. Intellectual property has always been a grey area - because not all artists have the time or resourses to follow through with such matters to court i guess, but AP knew they had an amazingly high profile case. Good on Shep that he has setteled and Its good that the photographer will benefit from the sales aswell, i hope it will encourage collaborations between more artists and photographers in the future, read about on the bbc website
