Don't pull Joseph's cape off...
Richard Ardagh told us he was lucky enough to meet the great granddaughter of Bertram Dooley (left-hand photo) who performed with Joseph Merrick, aka The Elephant Man in Sam Roper's Fair of 1885. Sue Dulay - her surname inherited from the stage adaptation by her grandfather Benson Dulay, an illusionist - was interested in Richard's Elephant Man poster and relayed her grandfather's stories: Bertram used to visit Joseph in his caravan, remarking on his high standard of conversation and also made a point of protecting him from any unwanted attention, on one occassion knocking a young hooligan out for trying to pull Joseph's cape off...
